Artist's Daydream

By Kristin Turberville

To have sat next to your
Easel while you sketched
Parts and pieces
Of the subject in front of you,

All the while hoping
You would lean over
And show me your work…

To have sat next to your
Empty chair as you
Danced about the room
And created hysterics
In the class around you,

All the while hoping
You would look
Just to see if you had made me laugh…

To have sat next to you
While you acted the part
Of a teddy boy
Too tough to wear your glasses,

All the while hoping
You would put them on
Long enough to notice me next to you…

To have sat next to you
Just long enough to draw
A portrait of you,

All the while hoping
I had the real you
For myself…

Would have been enough.
