To Be a Poet
I was once told,
“To be a poet you must read poetry.”
Shakespeare, Emerson, Whitman and Keats
Great poets as you know can’t be beat
Along with the Brownings and Mr. Thoreau
I studied them in school but then let them go
For the poets that truly inspired me the most
Did not of their poetic talents boast
They came out speakers in soft and loud tones
Went mono to stereo and through my headphones
To shake, rattle and roll my beliefs
Stirring emotions of love, happiness and grief
These poets are famous as musicians
Holly and Berry of early rock ‘n’ roll traditions
From the seventies hail Elton and Lynne
These poets not read but listened to time and again
And one poet from the sixties stands above them all
Imagining peace Lennon answered the call
Once the Chief Beatle then just John
In my life the dreamer’s music plays on
And though he seems to not be here
This soul of a poetic generation is quite near
Still pointing so clearly that Love is the way
And as he told us, ‘what more can I say?’

Voicing My Passion
I am drunk
The sweet nectar of your voice
In my ears does resonate
The memory of the last time you sang
Those words
”I love you and I’m always thinking of you.”
The memory of your face
The flash of your eyes
How do you do what you do to me?
Taking me down with you
Where you go
That strawberry field
Just with you, very real
I know
That’s ALL that counts
Are you all I need?
Yes is my reply
Because you are not only singing of love
YOU are Love
I feel you wrapping around me
The touch without fingers
Embraces me full
My heart sings with your songs
Once again
Intoxicated by you
